Jermuk

Jermuk is one of the most beautiful places in Armenia: it is attractive for its green forests and high alpine meadows, flat plateaus and low mountains with “stone seas” protruding here and there, for the charming valley of the Arpa River where the majestic cliffs resemble the remains of ancient castles. A picturesque waterfall makes a huge impression: the crystal clear spring water is cascading into the gorge from 70 meters high.

This famous Armenian spa town is located at a height of 2000 meters above sea level in the north-eastern part of Vayots Dzor. The Arpa River flows through the town. The climate in Jermuk is mountainous – there are cool summers with a predominance of sunny weather and mild winters, mainly snowy and windless.

The town's name is connected with the existing hot mineral springs which are commonly called “Jermuk” in the Armenian language (“Jerm” – “hot”, “warm”). Later on the famous Jermuk mineral springs received the same name. By their composition and healing properties they are similar to the springs in Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. In addition, the water comes to the surface with a high temperature. The mineral water factory “Jermuk” is the largest industrial enterprise in the town.

The foundation of the modern spa town of Jermuk took place in 1935 on the recommendation of Armenian doctors. The distinctive features of the resort are a favorable climate and the hot mineral springs which attracted attention even in the 19th century. Jermuk was a popular holiday destination during the Soviet period - in 1980 the local sanatoriums and hotels could accommodate over a thousand patients at the same time. A large hall with drinking mineral water was built.

Nowadays this small and cozy town is one of the largest spa resorts in Armenia. It is also notable for its brand of mineral water. The sparkling mineral water “Jermuk” is largely exported to markets around the world.

Now, thanks to a new approach and to the European style of work, Jermuk has become a modern centre of tourism and health improvement. It attracts thousands of tourists from Armenia and foreign countries.
