The Republic of Armenia is located in a subtropical zone, which has a significant impact on climatic characteristics of the country. Regardless of the season, the weather differs greatly even in neighboring areas. In general winters are rather sever and summers are dry and hot, in autumn and spring there can be ground frosts. Such climate is characterized by sudden weather changes and irregular rainfall.
The Ararat Valley (where Yerevan is located) has a continental climate with hot dry summers (the average temperature in July is up to + 26° С, with maximum up to + 42° С) and relatively cold winters (the average temperature in January is - 4° С) with relatively low precipitation (the annual precipitation is 350 mm).
In highlands the climate is cold and wet. The average temperature in January drops to - 14° С, and in July it’s only + 10° С. And the annual precipitation is over 800 mm.
In midlands in the north and south-east of the country the climate is humid and warm-temperate. The average temperature in January is - 4 - 0° С, and + 18 - + 19°С in July. In the central part of the country the climate is temperate. Summers are warm (the average temperature in July is + 18 - + 20° С), and winters are cold (the average temperature in January is - 10° С) with heavy snowfalls. The average annual precipitation is 760 mm.
In the far north-east and south - east of the country, at the altitude of at least 1 500 meters the climate is dry and sub-tropical, so summers in this region are long and hot with the average temperature of + 24° С, and winters are mild and snowy with the average temperature of 0°С. The average annual precipitation is 300 - 400 mm.
In lowlands which are adjacent to the Ararat Valley in the north and east, the climate is moderately dry with warm summers (the average temperature in July is + 20° С) and cold winters (the average temperature in January is - 7° С).
The best season in Armenia is considered to be autumn when the sun is not that aggressive as in August and July but the weather is warm and sunny. The special charm of this season lies in a bewitching beauty of autumn nature and abundance of fruit.
