Vayots Dzor

Vayots Dzor is situated in the south of Armenia. A large part of the territory is occupied by uplands without any forest cover and only 20% of this land is cultivated. Rivers Yevghard and Arpa flow throughout this territory. The capital of the province is Yeghegnadzor, situated on the bank of Arpa River.

In this city you may find monuments remained from the 1st millennium B.C. and those dated the 17th century A.D. There are also Ethnographic Museum, galleries, parks and the University that celebrated its 700th anniversary. The southern part of the province is rich in flora, medicinal herbs, springs and various species of animals. In the Noravank gorge there’s a monastery complex with the same name, Noravank. It was built in the 12th-16th centuries. On the same territory there’s National Park with numerous caves that are of great interest to researchers in this field. Here were found the remains of ancient settlements - Egegiz (5th-8th centuries), Mor (from the 2nd millennium B.C. to the 15th century A.D.), Proshaberd (8th century), Smbataberd (10th-13th centuries) and fortresses Berdakar (the 5th century) and Kechut (10th-14th centuries).

Jermuk Resort

In the north-eastern part of Vayots Dzor, Jemruk resort is situated up-river. The auto road to it runs through a narrow gorge. Harsh landscape gradually softens, greens become more common, by forming two rather large mountain plateaus on which Jemruk is located among the meadows.

On all sides this resort city is surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges with forested slopes. Here you may find various wild fruit trees – pear-, plum-, apple-trees. Here you may also see forest animals, including foxes, hares, badgers, and sometimes bears.

Jermuk area is also rich in unique springs, both fresh and mineral. The most remarkable ones are thermal-mineral similar to those in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia. The temperature of water in these springs may reach 62 degrees, they’re also highly saturated with carbon dioxide. Since ancient times local people have known about healing properties of these waters and used them for their benefit

Rich in mineral waters, Jermuk is also notable for its wonderful mild climate. Cool summers characterized by clear weather, lack of fogs in spring and autumn combines with a mild, windless and snowy winter. All this combined with a pure mountain air makes the rest in various health resorts very comfortable and pleasant.

Near mineral springs there are many health resorts, vacation retreats and hotels. Mineral waters have a curative effect on stomach, abdomen, liver diseases and neurotic disorders. Underground sources are used for drinking as well as for inhalations, baths, etc.
