The national flag of the Republic of Armenia

Article 13 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia (adopted on July 5, 1995) says, “The flag of the Republic of Armenia has three horizontal and equal stripes of red, blue and orange colors.”

It is widely thought that flag colors symbolize the following: red symbolizes blood, shed by many generations of Armenians for freedom and independence of Armenia, blue symbolizes a calm and peaceful sky over Armenia, and orange symbolizes constructive labor, which is the basis of prosperity.

The same flag was the national flag of the First Republic of Armenia (1918-1920). With the establishment of Soviet power in Armenia the flag was abolished. Armenian SSR had its own national flag. It was a red banner with a blue longitudinal stripe with a five-pointed star and crossed hammer and sickle in the upper left corner of the flag.

During mass democratic movements in February 1988, stimulated by the Karabakh events at meetings and demonstrations featuring thousands of people one could see a three-colored flag, which became a symbol of the desired freedom and independence. In 1989, by decision of the Supreme Council of the Soviet Armenia Когда a three-colored flag was declared “the national flag of Armenia”, by keeping the national flag of Armenian SSR. On August 23, 1990 when the Supreme Council adopted the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, according to which Armenian SSR was renamed to the Republic of Armenia, the national flag of the newly formed republic became a tricolor (red, blue and orange).

Now the national flag of the Republic of Armenia flutters over the buildings of the President’s residence, the National Assembly and the Government of Armenia, as well as over embassies and consulates of Armenia in foreign countries. The national flag of Armenia is also hoisted in front of the UN Secretariat in New York (Armenia joined this organization in March 1992)

The national emblem of Armenia

All countries in the world have their own emblems. As a rule, the national emblem features some elements that reflect the nature, natural wealth or the history of the country.

Armenia also has its own national emblem. Soon after declaration of independence (September 21, 1991) it was decided that the national emblem of a newly created country would be the emblem of the First Republic of Armenia (1918-1920). The Act “On the national emblem of the Republic of Armenia”, adopted by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia on April 19, 1992.

In olden times the government of the First Republic of Armenia assigned the architect Alexander Tamanyan and the artist Akol Kodzhoyan to create a national emblem. The draft created by these specialists formed the basis of the national emblem of the First Republic of Armenia and, consequently, the current national emblem of our country.

The national emblem of the Republic of Armenia is a shield in the center of which there’s Mount Ararat with Noah’s Ark on its peak (according to the Bible it was Mount Ararat where Noah’s Ark landed after the universal flood). The rest of the shield is divided into four parts illustrating coats of arms of four kingdoms (dynasties) of historical Armenia. It symbolizes that the current republic is a successor of ancient Armenian nationhood. Under the shield there is a sword, a branch, a sheaf, a chain and a ribbon.

The national emblem of the Republic of Armenia can be seen on banknotes and coins of the country and on signboard of official agencies: ministries, agencies, etc. A large relief image of the national emblem of the Republic of Armenia hangs on the wall of the Presidential study.
