Dilijan

Dilijan, an important Armenian spa resort, is located in the beautiful Aghstev valley covered with lush forests, 106 km north-east of Yerevan. Dilijan is one of the largest settlements in the Tavush region of Armenia.
In ancient times the area of the town was part of the ghawar Varazhnunik of the Ayrarat province of Greater Armenia. There was a summer residence and a hunting ground of the Armenian Arshakuni Kings.
The name of the town is connected with a sad legend. Once upon a time there was a shepherd by the name of Dili. Once he got lost with a herd in the mountains and did not return home. His frightened mother went to the mountains and began calling her son: “Dili - jan, where are you, answer me!” Finally, on the lawn she found her son's body torn by wolves, and cried loudly: “Dili - jan! Dili - jan!” Thus the name of this place Dilijan (Dili - jan) appeared.
Dilijan is mainly a spa town and a popular health resort. Crystal clear forest air, mild climate, warm sun, and curing mineral water “Dilijan” make it a perfect place for health improvement. There are many luxury hotels, guest houses, and tourist camps. You can also book the sanatoriums “Mountainous Armenia” or “Dilijan” – an institution for children who have TB-infected family members.
Dilijan is a highway center and a railway station. The town has some great examples of the traditional Armenian architecture as well as a unique folk art museum, a branch of the National Gallery of Armenia, and a local history museum. There is also the Composers’ House where many celebrities prefer to stay.
Do you have passion for history? Dilijan and its surroundings have many archaeological monuments from the first millennium BC to the 12-13th centuries AD. One of the most popular attractions is the Haghartsin Monastery Complex located 12 kilometers east of the town.
So, the tourists get a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the amazing beauty of nature (the resort is often called “little Switzerland”), to improve their health, and to visit interesting historical sites.
