Tsaghkadzor

Tsaghkadzor is a popular health and ski resort with an age-long history. In ancient times it was called Tsahkotsadzor or Tsaghkunyats Dzor (the “Valley of Flowers” in Armenian) and used as a summer residence of the Armenian Arshakuni Kings.

Tsaghkadzor is located on the forested slope of Teghenis Mountains, 50 kilometers north of Yerevan. Thanks to its curing and mild climate (the average temperature in August is + 180 C, in January - just -60 C), the resort attracts thousands of tourists who come here to relax, improve their health, and enjoy the beauty of nature. The paths in the dense flowery forests (hence the name of the city) lead to alpine meadows, to cold healing springs including the famous Ardzhahpyur and Ttujur, and to mount Teghenis with a snowy peak.

For many decades Tsaghkadzor has been considered one of the best summer resorts for schoolchildren. The first holiday camps appeared in the woods long time ago. The place was called the “Valley of the Brave”, and it charmed the first tourists so much that it quickly became famous. Then many summer camps were built here: “Parvana”, “Haroun”, “Mesrop Mashtots”, “Artsiv”, and others. They accommodated not only children from Armenia, but also children from other countries.

Tsaghkadzor is an ideal place for a family vacation. Besides numerous hotels and guest houses, there is also a children’s recreational institution, a sanatorium for mothers with children, a holiday home of the Writers’ Union of Armenia. The tourists can also visit the Olympic base of Armenia - a huge sports complex with beautiful modern buildings, playgrounds, swimming and diving pools.

Tsaghkadzor offers excellent opportunities for spending winter vacations. Ski and snowboard enthusiasts can take advantage of a ropeway (its length is 4699 meters and its height is 544 meters) and get from the valley Tandzahpyur to the slope of Teghenis. During the recent years all ropeway lifts were fully modernized.

It is necessary to note that Tsaghkadzor is also known for its architectural monuments, the most famous of them is the Kecharis Monastery built in the 11-13th centuries. Tourists often come here to learn more about the Armenian medieval architecture. The Monastery surroundings have many beautiful khachkars and tombstones.

These famous people lived and worked in Tsaghkadzor: the great scholar and teacher Gregory Magistros (10-11 centuries); Prince Vasak Hagbakyan; the poet Khachatur Kecharetsi (13-14th centuries); the architect Vetsik Vardapet (13th century), and others. The Orbeli brothers’ house-museum dedicated to the Armenian scientists Ruben, Levon and Joseph is also located here.
