Guidelines for Cast Stone Installation

In order to achieve a good result when installing decorative cast stone, pay attention to these simple tips:

  • It is necessary to use elastic thinset only, for example Evrotech 1, 2.
  • When storing and installing cast stone, avoid getting it wet.
  • The facade of the building should be covered with tarpaulin to avoid contact with moisture and direct sunlight.
  • The work should be carried out at temperatures from +10 ° to +25 ° C.
  • It is necessary to prepare the wall surface: remove a loose layer of plaster, if necessary, align the surface irregularities, then fix a flat metal grid with 15-35 mm cells on the wall, and fill in the grid with an adhesive composition. The wall must be firm, smooth, clean and dry.

  • Grease contamination is inadmissible. If the surface temperature is above +30° C, then it should be primed with Cemix Primer, Uni - Grunt (Atlas), Primer - G (Mapei), Ceresit ct.-14, on which the stone will be applied. You can start the work in 2 hours after the primer is dry.
  • Apply the lower row of cast stone at a height of 10-12 cm from the paving (the height of the “drop bounce”).
  • Pre-mark the surface (horizontally). Divide the total area into several working sectors (one sector is approximately 7 rows of cast stone). Leave 1 cm for each seam.
  • Apply “Atlas”, “Atlas+” or ordinary thinset for internal and external works on a small area (0.5 square meters) to prevent it from drying before you glue the stone. It is better to lay out the rows in a top-down order, so you have time to remove the excess thinset.
  • Work with a notched trowel diagonally to create a ribbed thinset surface (6 mm for slim bricks, 8 mm for antic bricks and 10 mm for Variorock).
  • Firmly press the stones into the thinset. Start from the outer corners. It is necessary to take stones from different boxes.
  • For heavy stones, for example Variorock, apply the thinset not only to the basis, but also to the stone itself. After that immediately press the stone to the wall.
  • If the stone is removed from the wall, its whole surface should be uniformly covered with the thinset. Thus, you can control the installation process.
  • It is simple to achieve the desired shape - the stone can be easily sawn. In addition, you can make a notch on the back of the stone and break it.
  • Use pliers to handle the clean cut of the sawn stone to imitate the “natural roughness.”
  • For pointing, use the dry jointing mortar “Atlas” diluted with water according to the instruction. If the proportions are correct, the mortar will have a granular structure; it will be sticky and semi-dry. For each serving, use the same amount of water to avoid a color difference.
  • Use a pointing trowel to fill in the joints with the mortar, and then smooth it with a pressing movement. As a rule, the vertical joints are thinner than the horizontal ones.
  • Remove the excess mortar from the joints using a stiff brush.
  • You can also use a slightly wet brush to smooth the thinset in the joints until its coat is equal to the edge of the cast stone.
  • For additional protection, use the water-repellent composition “Akvazaschita M” or its analogues to surface the walls. Before starting the work, check the wall: hydrophobization is carried out when the thinset and the jointing mortar are completely dry.
