1991 The State Defense Committee (attached to the Council of Ministers) is established on Armenian government order. On December 5, 1991, the Armenian president appoints Vazgen Sargsyan to the post of the Defense Minister.
1992 The government makes a landmark decision on Armenian Defense Ministry, which lays legal ground for the foundation of the Armenian national army.

September

September, 21
1991 On national referendum Armenians vote for declaration of independence from the USSR (Armenia was its part since 1921). Since that time September, 21 is Armenian Independence Day.

October, 19
1974 Creation of the United Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery (attached to USSR Ministry of Public Health) in Yerevan.

1781 Treaty of Reconciliation is signed between King Heraklion the Second of Georgia and Yerevan's Khan.

1922 Opening of the Yerevan State Museum containing exhibits on history, art, archeology and ethnography of Armenia.

1855 Russian troops occupy Ghars (Western Armenia).
1869 Official opening ceremony of the Suez Canal (its construction began in 1859).

1980 Awards and orders named after Mesrop Mashtots, Petros Adamyan, Anania Shirakatsi, Abovyan, Saryan and Komitas are created in Armenia.

1967 Opening ceremony of the Memorial dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in Yerevan.

1808 Russian troops try to besiege the Yerevan Fortress.

1824 Opening of Nersisyan School in Tbilisi (Georgia). It existed till 1924.

1912 Outstanding Armenian writer Ovanes Tumanyan (1869 - 1923) organizes the “Society of Armenian Writers” in Tbilisi (Georgia) and becomes its chairman.

December, 18
1806 Start of the Russo-Turkish war.
1993 Military intervention of the Turkish army (60,000 soldiers including Afghan mujahidins and other hired troops) on the territory of Artsakh (Nagorno-Krabakh) from its all boundary regions.
