The Armenian Catholicosate of Akhtamar (1113-1895)

In 1113 in Karmir Bank monastery Catholicos Barsegh, who was at the point of death, introduced his successor - 20-year old Bishop Gregory. After the death of the Catholicos, the Council conveyed in Karmir Bank elected Gregory as a new Catholicos of All Armenians. However, David, the Bishop of Akhtamar, was against that decision. Later on a Council of five bishops, taking into consideration the facts that Gregory was too young, and that the Holy See had been previously located in Akhtamar (927-947), and that the See of the Catholicos was beyond the territory of Armenia, elected Bishop David as the Catholicos of All Armenians. In 1114 a Council in which 2500 bishops, monks and princes from the new Armenian provinces, Cilicia and Greater Armenia took part approved the election of Gregory III as the Catholicos of All Armenians. As for the Catholicosate of Akhtamar, it existed till 1895 as a local See.
