The Armenian Church Traditions: the Communion Chalice

For the Sacrament of Holy Communion (Eucharist) the Armenian Church uses wine withoutmixing it with water while all other Churches use wine mixed with water.

The tradition to mix wine with water was introduced by Roman Bishop Alexander (105-115).According to his words, this action symbolizes the blood and water which poured out of the sideof Lord Jesus Christ as He hung on the Cross. This innovation was gradually adopted inByzantium and on the West.

The Armenian Church stayed with the old apostolic tradition of using unmingled wine.According to their teaching, the water which poured out of the Savior’s side symbolizes theSacrament of Baptism while the blood – the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
